(Well, I know...)

I was at the gym friday morning, doing cardio and watching a little morning news... when, up popped a segment on GMA (Good Morning America) about spending less on groceries.

They visited a little grocer that sells salvaged goods. Basically, any grocery item that's dinged, dented, crushed or ready to expire.

I quickly recognized the store, because when I was a little boy - from the ages of 7 to 13, we used to shop there. (Here a link to the video/story --> http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/MensHealth/story?id=8398640 )

Yep, it was little grocer located in my hometown of Arvada, Colorado.

Back then, it was just my Mother and I. We were dirt poor. Living with a friend of my Moms, and her own three kids. I shared a small room, with two other boys, and slept on an old Army fold-away bed.

Did I care? Not a bit.

Did it bother me to be poor? Well, maybe a little.

But, quite honestly, I didn't know any better.

We also used to visit the local Arvada Food Bank, to stand in line to get powdered milk, a block of cheese and butter and some bread. Hey, it was free, and we needed it!

The Arvada Food Bank's mission... No One Should Go To Bed Hungry!
Man, that is one powerful mission.

http://www.arvadacommunityfoodbank.org/

Fast forward 30 years, I was approached by another local Coloradian CEO, Mike Donner (of Pridemark Paramedics) to see if I wanted to take part in a voluntary program for Arvada Food Bank -- called the Backpack Program.

I was surprised (and shocked) to learn that over 600 school-aged kids go home every weekend, from schools in Arvada alone, with little to no food over the weekend. So, to combat this, their great program puts together a backpack filled with various food items to keep them nourished over the weekend, until they can return to school.

Little did my friend, Mike, know that I had to once rely on the Arvada Food Bank to get food for my Mother and I. So as you can guess, I jumped at the opportunity to help out.

I volunteered to supply every kid's backpack with Voots (our fruit and veggie tarts). I signed us up to supply their Backpack Program for as long as Voots were being made (which, I truly hope, is for a long, long time)!

And make no mistake about it, I didn't do this to get recognized, or receive an honorary award. I gladly took part in this program because it was the "right" thing to do. Because it was my way of giving back. And, gosh darnit, I do it because it just plain makes me feel good about helping out!

In some small way, I am able to help. But more important, my own children can see how blessed they are, and able to learn - firsthand - that giving of yourself is so much better (and more fufilling) than buying something for yourself.

Read my weight training, muscle building, fat burning, & exercise tips from Real SOLUTIONS

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://stephenadele.blogspot.com/2009/08/whats-it-like-to-be-dirt-poor-well-i.html' title='What's it like to be dirt poor? I know how important trust is in this business. Every decision we make in our business is based on earning and keeping your trust.

When I learned someone had apparently tampered with one of the products we distribute, specifically the Hardcore Energize Bullet, I was shocked and angry. And I was deeply concerned on behalf of our company, but most of all, for the consumers who buy and trust our products.

The tampering incident is isolated, and occurred in Canada. We have reached out to retailers in Canada and launched a voluntary recall of manufacturing lots that might have been tampered with. And we will continue to work closely with our manufacturer, and with Health Canada and the U.S. FDA, to provide any support they may need for their investigations and to give consumers peace of mind.

Because some of the information circulating about the recall of the Hardcore Energize Bullet products isn’t accurate, it’s important for people who use this product to know the facts:

- The lot numbers of the products that have been recalled (1961, 1962, 1963 and 1794) were distributed only in Canada.

- If you bought the product in Canada, or you aren’t sure where it was purchased, it’s crucial that you look at the lot number – it is printed on the top of the cap in black ink – and if you find a product where there is no lot number present, or if the number is among the recalled lots (contained in the last four digits), do not use the product.

- If you bought Hardcore Energize Bullet-branded products in the U.S., there is no reason to question their safety or quality. No adulteration has been found in lots of the product distributed and sold in the U.S.

In either event, even though we have reason to believe the tampering in these lots wasn’t widespread, personal safety is the most important thing; don’t take a chance. If you have any concerns, whatsoever, please feel free to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

To help, I have posted a website that answers more specific questions you might have as a consumer or retailer about the recent Health Canada and FDA advisory and recall.

Please click here to visit: http://www.energizebulletnotice.com

I appreciate the trust you have given us over the years. I want you to know that I am committed to doing everything in my power to continue to earn that trust and build on our relationship.

Sincerely,

-Stephen Adelé
CEO, iSatori Technologies

What NOT to do in the gym...

ok, so today...

I was doing my morning cardio (nothing special, just the stationary bike), and i look over to the person beside me.

An attractive, middle-aged lady. Colorado Springs ranks second in the Men's Fitness magazine list while Denver ranks sixth. Magazine editor Neal Boulton admits the list is unscientific, put says he puts it out to motivate people to do simple things in their lives to be healthy. His survey of 50 cities examines lifestyle factors in each, including fast-food restaurants per capita and availability of gyms or bike paths. Topping the list of fittest cities? Albuquerque, New Mexico. Las Vegas earned the dubious distinction of being the fattest. (Copyright Associated Press, All Rights Reserved.)

Read my weight training, muscle building, fat burning, & exercise tips from Real SOLUTIONS

The Top 8 Deadliest Foods

Researchers in Sweden found acrylamide was formed when carbohydrate-rich foods such as potatoes, rice or cereals are heated.

The US Environmental Protection Agency classifies acrylamide, a colourless, crystalline solid, as a medium hazard probable human carcinogen.

Acrylamide induces gene mutations and has been found in animal tests to cause benign and malignant stomach tumours.

It is also known to cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous system.

Acrylamide was not found in uncooked or boiled food--studies indicate that it appears to form during certain high-temperature (greater than 250 F) cooking processes, such as frying and baking, and that levels of acrylamide increase with heating time. Pre-cooked foods, as well as packaged and processed foods, have been found to contain acrylamide.

Such foods could pose a potential health risk to millions of people around the world (that means you too, if you’re eating them).

The research was deemed so important that scientists took the unusual step of going public with their findings before the details had been officially published in an academic journal.

Leif Busk, head of the Food Administration's research department, was quoted as saying: "I have been in this field for 30 years and I have never seen anything like this before."

The Foods at Risk (according to the study*):

- Soft bread (made as toast)
- Cornflakes
- Rice Krispies® (breakfast cereal)
- Popcorn
- Potato chips
- Crackers
- Crisps
- French fries

The discovery that acrylamide is formed during the preparation of food, and at high levels, is relatively new knowledge and still under investigation.
But, it may now be possible to explain some of the cases of cancer caused by food.

*Reference: The study was carried out by Stockholm University in collaboration with experts at Sweden's National Food Administration, a government food safety agency.

Read my weight training, muscle building, fat burning, & exercise tips from Real SOLUTIONS

The Most Interesting Man I Know

I recently had dinner with a good friend, and without a doubt, the most interesting person I know. His name is Shane Hamman.

Shane is not your average guy. Let me tell you a little bit about him:

--> He's 5'9"
--> has a 22-inch neck,
--> 22-inch biceps,
--> 22-inch calves,
--> 35-inch thighs,
--> a 47-inch waist,
--> a 62-inch chest, and

(No, he's not Superman!)

But if that isn't enough, he's also considered the strongest man in America.

How so? Well, as a U.S. Olympic weightlifter, he hoisted a one-time record squat of 1,008 lbs.

In 1999, Shane became the first U.S. man to win a weightlifting gold medal at the 1999 Pan American Games.

To say this guy is amazingly strong would be an understatement. But, what's even more amazing is Shane's spirit--his internal strength--which, believe or not, far outweighs his brute strength. Let me tell you why...

Common sense would tell you that Shane's strength comes from the fact that he's spent the last twelve years of his life at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, training six days a week, twice a day.

Or, that he eats three square meals a day.

But the truth is, Shane's strength comes from within. From his unwavering faith in God.

Ask him how he is able to clean and jerk 500 lbs.,

Or how he can snatch 430 lbs.,

Or, why he holds three American records in the 105+kg (that's equivalent to roughly 230+ lbs) weight class,

and his answer is always the same:

..."the power of God flows through me and provides me with all of the strength I need."

What I find most fascinating about Shane though, is that while most guys of his stature or size wouldn't dare confess their strength, or power, comes from a higher being. (Because that might seem to wimpy.)

But not Shane. He stands and shouts it.

I admire that about him.

But what I find even more interesting about Shane is that he has boldly decided to take his strength, and the power of his words, and put them to good use.

Shane has teamed up with victim of Columbine shooting's family, and use his weight (pun intended!) to speak out against teen violence.

It's a wonderful cause, called "Rachel's Challenge."
http://www.rachelschallenge.com/

See, Rachel Scott was one of the students killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. (A school a mere two miles from my home). Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her 6 diaries have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in America.

Rachel's Challenge is a program that INSPIRES, INSTRUCTS, and ENABLES students to bring positive change to your school atmosphere.

Shane travels about 20 to 25 days a month (Yes, that's a month) to high schools all across America, using his powerful words, and Faith, to help students understand the importance of their actions.

He motivates them to positive change in the way they treat others. And he's had great success.

If you remember back to an article I wrote, called "The Ripple Effect," Shane is a living, powerful example of how one person can have a dramatic effect on others, and this positive influence can have a ripple effect -- a chain reaction, if you will -- well beyond the origin.

Oh yeah... Shane can do a couple more amazing things too. He can dunk a basketball with two hands, has a vertical standing leap of 36 inches, has a handicap of eight on the golf course, and can hit a golf ball 350 yards.

But you know what, the way I see it, nothing tops the work Shane is now devoting his life to, and the strength he is instilling in students and kids across America.

I am extremely proud to consider myself a friend of Shane.

And it's for these reasons, and many more (which I'll share with you later) that I find Shane Hamman to be the most interesting, and inspirational man I know.

* Stay tuned... in future editions of my newsletter (and magazine) Real SOLUTIONS, because I'll be sharing more exciting stories and facts about Shane Hamman, his philosophies about becoming the best you can (at anything you want), his techniques for developing strength and muscle mass, and his powerful new endeavor, Rachel's Challenge.

Read my weight training, muscle building, fat burning, & exercise tips from Real SOLUTIONS

A True Body of Work

Body Worlds.

Have you heard of it? If so, you'll know what I'm talking about. If not, you don't want to miss it.

Body Worlds is an exhibition, generally at museums, created by Dr. Gunther von Hagens -- where he displays authentic bodies, various body parts and internal organs in a state of post-death, but before decay. I know it sounds grotesque, but it's really quite facinating. It's a process he engineered called Plastination preservation technique.

I went to see this "sold out" exhibition, and I can honestly say it was one of the most mesmerizing displays of human anatomy I've ever witnessed. I spent three-and-a-half hours (where most people spend a mere hour or less)... fascinated by the art, beauty and sophistication of the human body. It made me truly appreciate how delicate, yet complex, we are. And, more important, that we only get one body. Just one.

If you get the opportunity, and Body Worlds comes to your neck of the woods, do yourself a favor and go visit it. You won't be dissapointed.

* If you'd like to learn more about Body Worlds, Dr. Gunther von Hagens and his motivation to start a public exhibition of authentic human bodies, visit here:
http://www.bodyworlds.com/index.html

Read my weight training, muscle building, fat burning, & exercise tips from Real SOLUTIONS

Curve Balls, Speeding Tickets, & Death at Disney World

Does life tend to throw you unexpected events, when you least expect them?

Yet, do you find yourself responding to them the same way you always have, yet somehow expect a different outcome? If so, then you should probably read this...

Late last night, I turned on the TV to catch the final bit of ESPN's daily sports summaries. I saw one of my beloved Colorado Rockies baseball players up to bat. Two fast ball pitches, right down the middle, and two whiffed strikes. Next pitch, a curve ball. Swing. Miss. Strike three. Out 'a there!

Driving into the gym, early this morning at 5:45 am, I pass by a familiar car on the side of the rode. It belongs to a bright, young lady that is a personal trainer at the gym I train at. (I'll keep her name anonymous for obvious reasons). She's been pulled over, by a policeman. And she's got her door open, talking to the police offer, while she's signing a ticket (what I'd presume was a speeding ticket, knowing the area).

Then, later that same morning, while doing cardio on the recumbent bike at the gym, I look up to see a news flash on the TV: "Boy Dies after Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Ride at Disney World." A 12 year old boy. Too early to leave this earth. Tragic. Truly devastating for his parents, I'm sure. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

Take a minute to look at the these three examples I've just written about. Completely different, yet at the same time, they are similar. What's similar about them? Unexpectedness.

Each one of these people surely didn't expect to have this happen to them. They were expecting a different outcome.

But, as you and I know, life doesn't work in a straight line. It is full of peaks and valley's. Ups and downs. Curve balls get thrown at us all of the time. Yet, the way I see it, it's the way we go about reacting to these unexpected events that defines who we are, and more important, who we will become.

When life throws you a curve ball, do you react the same way each time? Or, do you look back on the event, learn something from it, and carry that with you? For the next time you're faced with a great challenge, you are much better prepared to handle it with confidence, grace and an unwavering conviction to overcome it.

Ask yourself: What recent event has unexpectedly come your way, and how did you handle it? And more important, what did you learn from it? ---> Click the "comments" link below and add your story... Like R. Lance Mendenhall, from American Folk, Utah, who stood up and proudly stated...

"I came here selfishly for myself -- to learn how to build a better body, and I'm leaving to go home and take better care of my family... who desperately need healthier habits!"

And Diane Lawrence who, along side her husband Andrew, emphatically stated...

"I came here with my husband for a 'vacation,' thinking it was going to be a bunch of bodybuilders, and what I found was an inspirational weekend, filled with great people, from whom I've learned much more about myself and that I need to start teaching others what I know about living healthy and building a better body."

Then there was the unforgettable, Jeff Hinzman, from Albuquerque New Mexico, who at 350 lbs, vowed to come back "half the [size] man he is now," for next year's Camp.

--> More great stories, told firsthand by those who attended, can be found here on our lively, interactive Real SOLUTIONS' Message Board:

http://www.realsolutionsmag.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=5895&pageNo=1

These comments and many, many more like them filled our weekend with a true sense of meaning and purpose and helped us all understand that while we were together to learn from the very best experts in the field of nutrition, exercise and supplementation... we gained a new respect for ourselves and a powerful insight into why we are constantly striving to build a better body and seeking to live a healthier, stronger, richer life -- not only for ourselves but take what we've learned and help others along the way.

I salute you "Boot-Campers."

** If you're interested in attending our next "Fitness & Nutrition Boot Camp," (should we decide to host another one) please send an email to us at info@isatoritech.com and we'll be sure to keep your name on the top of our priority list. Anyway...

Ever like me, and some days you don't feel like going to the gym or working out? Hey, it happens.

Now most days I'm pretty fired up, but I'll admit, there are a few mornings, when my alarm goes off at 5am ... I grumble around, mumbling to myself about not wanting to hit the weights.

It could have been I had a late night working. Or I slept horribly. Or, I'm just flat out too exhausted. Regardless, I'm missing the spark to workout.

Then it clicks. An image comes over me, like an epiphany of sorts. I think to my two friends -- Evan and Tom.

First, Evan. Recently, while at war in Iraq, he was leading a convoy of Hummers (pre-armor doored) and he ran over a land mine. In a flash, he lost both his legs and part of his right hand and lost his vision in one eye. Talk about devastation.

Well, I am happy to say that less than ten months later, and after 27 surgeries, Evan is back on his new "feet", and living life to its fullest. He just got married. And, because of his love for the gym, and staying physically fit, he's back hitting the weights and running track for cardio. Check out the picture here of Evan running track in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado.

Next is Tom. Tom was born with a developmental disability called cerebral palsy.

Tom works out at the same gym I often do. 24 Hour Fitness, in Lakewood. He's there, bright and early, just like I am at 6:00am sharp. I swear, the guy never misses a day!

He even let's me know when he didn't see me, and asks why I wasn't there. In truth, there's absolutely no way I can let him down, and tell him well ... "I didn't feel like it"... I mean, Tom, who doesn't even acknowledge his disability, despite the fact that it literally takes him 10 minutes just to get from his parked car -- and no, as you might have guessed, he doesn't take up a handicap spot either -- to the front door of the gym. Ten minutes. Then, Tom proceeds to work out, with weights. His body barely able to move, but still he slowly works through each lift, meticulously working the muscles and bodypart carefully.

One day I asked Tom, just as a matter of interest, why he works out so religiously everyday. His answer: "because I can!"

Take Away Message: Ever have a day when life's normal aches and pains are bothering you and you feel like complaining? I forget my iPod at home (in my office, on the charger).

I seriously considered driving back home to get it. That's how addicted I am to it. Believe or not, I actually have songs loaded on there, which are set to a very specific cadence - and order - to train with. Perfect timing. Perfect rhythm. It's great!

Well, since I left I my iPod at home, I was stuck listening to (bla, bla, bla... what? I can't hear you)... the overhead speakers were espousing, of all things... the Scorpions.

Remember those guys? "Feel me like a hurricane" was blaring on the speakers. For a moment, right before I thought I was going to get sick, I was taken back to my 'heavy metal' days. Yeah. Iron Maiden. Ozzy. Metallica. When I was younger, I was *really* into this music genre. Then suddenly, a sigh of relief came over me when I remembered the song was going to end soon.

Then, for some strange reason, the song played again. Oh, how I missed my iPod. Dearly. Funny how you can fall in love with such a product. When this happens, it's no longer a brand, but a 'lovemark.' Yes, I can say it... I love my iPod. And, today, I *really* missed having it. As pathetic as it sounds, my training actually suffered.

So, what motivates you, when you're training? I bet it's not the Scorpions. I do know now that if I ever forget my iPod again, I'll happily drive back home and get it, so I can enjoy my workout and not be subject to 'head-banger's ball' at my local 24hour fitness! ;-)

Read my weight training, muscle building, fat burning, & exercise tips from Real SOLUTIONS

Mullets, pink panties and bodybuilding

I pondered for hours . . . no, make that days, contemplating what to write in my inaugural post on the new blog. Then it hit me.

One morning, while working out at the 24-Hour Fitness, near my office in Golden, I was headed to the cardio machines . . . and there it was. My subject matter. A mullet.

Yep, you read that right. I walked by a gentlemen who had a snazzy, well-groomed mullet.

If you're not sure what a mullet is . . . well, to say that the mullet is a hairstyle barely even scratches the surface. The mullet is a way of life. It is a state of mind. It is every person who wears one. Physically, it is characterized by short hair on the top, front, and sides of the head, followed by a long drape of hair on the back, sometimes permed.

. . . and in that moment, after seeing him, I was abruptly taken back to the days when I wore a mullet. In fact, later that day, when I got home, I dug up some old pictures of me, when I used to wear a mullet with pride.

I was looking at one photo in particular . . . a picture of me posing with my trophies, the day after I had won the Mr. Teenage Colorado bodybuilding championships (back in 1990), when my youngest daughter, Elle -- who was sitting in my lap -- asked, "Daddy, why do you have mommy's panties on?". . .

I belted out laughing. She didn't know why I was laughing so hysterically . . . but she had a point. Not only was the hair bad (thankfully she isn't old enough to know that), but what the heck was I doing wearing pink panties!?

My Take-away Message: Laughter is the best medicine for positive health. You can find humor in practically anything . . . even yourself. Do you take the time each and every day to laugh with someone, or make someone laugh? Maybe you should.

Read my weight training, muscle building, fat burning, & exercise tips from Real SOLUTIONS
